Whether you’re just gently starting back at work or already fully into the new year, January is a perfect time to focus on what will make the biggest difference to success, however your organisation defines it. Often the change in usual patterns enables us to take a more open perspective on the progress we’re making towards our goals.

Focusing the discussions on long term goals provides us with greater empowerment and flexibility to adjust strategic priorities and recognise both what is and isn’t working for us.

The following questions provide prompts for reviewing your priorities for this year and fast tracking strategic progress.

A short list of questions to ask to fast track strategic execution depending on whether you progressed your strategic priorities as or less than expected

If progress has been made, take a moment to recognise the progress! Questions to consider:

  • What had the greatest impact?

  • What would it take to increase or accelerate the progress? Were there areas that did not contribute? If yes, how might they be altered or should they be stopped?

If progress has been slower than anticipated, consider:

  • What have we learned about what works and what doesn’t work?

  • Were the original expectations reasonable?

  • Are the strategic priorities still the right ones to deliver on our outcomes?

  • Are there external or market changes that require priority readjustment?

  • What would it take to increase or accelerate progress?

Regularly evaluating and adjusting strategic priorities throughout the year is key to making meaningful and agile progress on your long term goals in a fast changing landscape.
