I often get asked about the value of strategic planning in increasingly uncertain and rapidly changing environments.

My answer is always yes….but with some important adjustments.
So, what is still relevant?
Agreement on vision for the future - Where we’re heading over the longer term.
Shared understanding – Knowledge of current external and internal environment, likely future trends and key signposts to monitor.
Building commitment - Involving people early in what may radically transform the way they work creates greater buy-in.
Making strategic choices – Being clear about what you will and won’t do and how this aligns with the purpose and vision.
A roadmap that guides organisational focus and priorities.
And, what might need to change?
Plans with shorter time horizons.
Considering multiple scenarios and identifying potential signposts of changes.
A dynamic road map adjusted based on environmental scanning and learnings
Flexible portfolio of strategic initiatives with decision gates to expedite rapid changes.
Quick pilots or experiments to test out new opportunities.
More consistent engagement across the organisation on the long-term direction and how the organisation will adapt to changes.
